So It Was All Just A Dream… Or Was It?
Cocteau Twins – Ice-Pulse (MP3)
Death In Vegas – Help Yourself (MP3)
Sorry about that. I was just having little lie-down after my last post and must’ve dozed-off. I’d better post a couple of sissy indie dream-pop songs quickly, before anyone notices I’ve been away.
‘Ice-Pulse’ is from ‘Bluebeard EP’: one of Cocteau Twins’ later, post-4AD records when they were a bit more, well, dreamy and poppy. I’m not sure if Liz Fraser’s voice is everyone’s cup-of-tea, more instrument than vocal performance I suppose, but I think she’s ace and at her crystalline, multi-layered best on this. Robin Guthrie’s pop-goth guitar sounds great too. I managed to snaffle a 12″ copy of this on eBay not so long since for a very reasonable 99p (plus postage and packing of course). A bit of a bargain.
‘Help Yourself’ closes Death In Vegas’ 2002 ‘Scorpio Rising’ and is sung by Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval; again, another voice that’s probably not for everyone. Great production of course from Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes and some stunning string and sitar arrangements by violinist Dr. Subramaniam turn the typically fragile, half-whisperied sadness of Ms Sandoval into something majestic, epic and joyous. God I sound like I’m trying out for Pitchfork.
What?! Oh come on, you didn’t exactly expect me to post ‘Mammagamma‘ by The Alan Parsons Project did you?

Anyway, welcome back, you lazy sod…!
Chris added these pithy words on Nov 14 08 at 10:45 amNeed I doubt you own a copy of ‘Eye In The Sky’.
Have you got it on jade green vinyl though?
And if it’s not too much trouble let me know when you’re about next week, I believe I owe you a couple of pints of Hoegaarden for that 90 rupee phone call.
Mr Schools added these pithy words on Nov 14 08 at 12:42 pmNot on jade green vinyl, no (!), and I certainly don’t own the 12″ neither, stupid prices for that one, and i am sure it’s not even extended. I-Robot album is up there as well, a couple of winners on that one…
Errm, i shall hold you to that Hoegaarden promise, 90 rupees goes along way out here. I’ll give you a bell end of next week…
Until then…
Chris added these pithy words on Nov 14 08 at 2:08 pmSilly prices? Is that the 12″ single?
I was only on about the album which I do have on jade green vinyl and cost me £8 which I thought was pretty good.
magø added these pithy words on Nov 15 08 at 2:12 amNo, you don’t sound like you’re trying out for Pitchfork – you’re actually talking about the music and getting right to the point..! Well done.
Moka added these pithy words on Dec 01 08 at 2:55 amHow is Sandoval’s not for everyone? Her voice is all sultry and beautiful. I think it’s fairly easy on the ears, at least never heard anyone complain about her.
First time I hear this collab with death in vegas, thank you very much for the introduction.
Chris added these pithy words on Dec 05 08 at 12:09 amMoka, you must be fortunate to always find yourself in the company of those with only the finest taste. My Mum thinks she sounds “miserable and weary”.
