Akasha - Brown Sugar (PFM’s Cosmic Journey Mix) (MP3)
I was somewhat ambivalent over which version of this track to post. The original brings back very fond, hazy memories of being a narcotic induced 17/18 year old, no doubt on a descent to normality at one of the numerous friends after parties we used to end up at. This, more than likely, was after experimenting in the confines of either the Boardwalk or the Music Box in Manchester (most notably, club nights One Tree Island and the now very much defunct, Molotov Pop)…
Back then I was mad on all things Wall Of Sound, Skint, Pussyfoot and Big Beat orientated (I even had the numerous record label t-shirts to prove my allegiance). Now I know that this is something that you should probably keep quiet about; Big Beat is, and will continue to be, one of the most easily forgotten genres of music to intrude on our ears (fellow Big Beat ‘enthusiast’ and BFF contributor Stevo might have something to say about this). However, there are certain records to grace those labels that escaped the Big Beat mould, and that have most certainly, stood the test of time. ‘Brown Sugar’ by Akasha being one of them…
Released in 1997 on Wall Of Sound, the original is a 6 minute ethereal, downbeat journey, that entices you in with the celestial, yet slightly seductive tones of a mysterious female. To me, this still sounds as good today as it did 10 or so years ago, even without the hallucinogens. Not only that, the b-side beholds an excellent Drum n Bass remix by PFM. It’s not often (never, actually) about Drum n’ Bass on here, so feigning some sort of knowledge on the subject probably won’t pull the blinkers over anyone’s eyes. Instead, I’ll just say that PFM were responsible for a few early releases on LTJ Bukem’s GLR label, and this remix, I imagine, is a mighty fine example of their work…
Nostalgic. Me?
