Getting Back In The Spirit Of Things

Talk Talk - I Believe In You (MP3)
Were it not for my catching by chance one of those classic album type documentaries, sorry, “rockumentaries” on my recently purchased digital radio (living alone I was after that “it’s almost like actually having another real person in the flat” thing that I just don’t get from TV), I might never have known that slightly naff synthpop/New Wave band Talk Talk actually had a “good” period. There I was, doing a bit of baking with Stuart Maconie going on about their late 80’s experimental phase making the albums ‘The Colour Of Spring’ and ‘Spirit Of Eden’, all of which was sounding more than a little dubious (documentary footage of Scott Walker making ‘The Drift’ sprang to mind), but then he played ‘I Believe In You’ from 1988’s ‘Spirit Of Eden’, which I present here for your aural consumption.
This, and the album as a whole, is one of those patented Mark Scholes “lost in music” moments. It’s a pre post-rock album (if that makes any sense); a big bed-wetting indie record for great big indie bed-wetters* and it’s brilliant.
Oh, and welcome back.
* I thoroughly include myself in this category and no, it’s no mystery to me why I’m single.

Iwan added these pithy words on Mar 05 08 at 9:22 pmHave you heard Mark Hollis (lead singer of Talk Talk) solo album from a few years ago now. Called simply - Mark Hollis and so it should be…he’s a GENIUS.
steven added these pithy words on Mar 06 08 at 3:50 pmLegend goes when Hollis played ‘Spirit of Eden’ to his manager/a&r man, the poor guy burst into years. Probably more to do with the fact it had no choruses or potential hits & cost £250,000 to make rather than a reaction to the hushed Autumnal beauty of the music itself.
Kev added these pithy words on Mar 08 08 at 9:19 amWow that Scott Walker footage you linked to is strange. Never had him down as a weird dead pig meat punching fetishist.
