‘his mother called him noel’

scott walker - the old man’s back again (mp3)
i caught the last three quarters of an hour of a rather good bbc rockumentary on scott walker last night which prompted me to post this little quickie.
i think like most people, i’m pretty well aquainted (thanks mum) with the walker brothers (they weren’t actually brothers though, nor in fact were any of them even called walker - lying bastards) but i knew absolutely nothing of scott’s (real name noel scott engel) solo stuff until i bought air’s excellent late night tales compilation which has this from scott’s fourth solo album, and his first composed entirely of his own songs, 1969’s scott4.
it’s the bass, no the strings, no the chanting, no his voice: okay, the whole thing’s truly awesome. it’s just a monster of a song, it’s immense, it’s phil spector does ennio morricone and it makes me wonder how on earth i haven’t picked-up on any of this until now.
he was a good looking lad too, what with is mark scholes hair.

Kev added these pithy words on May 23 07 at 4:18 pmstrange, i watched that last night too and was going to blog this track later in the week! great record, it a shame he’s gone so bloody weird and unlistenable nowadays!
Chris added these pithy words on May 23 07 at 4:39 pmI thought you might be thinking about it Kev but what else can I say other than: ner ner neh ner ner!
What’s so unlistenable about donkey noises, pork-punching and moving around a make-shift giant thimble anyway?
Matt added these pithy words on May 25 07 at 6:29 pmAir’s Late Night Tales is great. It’s the best one in the series, in my opinion
Chris added these pithy words on May 25 07 at 8:02 pmOther than thinking they could’ve been a little less obvious with their choice of Minnie Riperton (there’re plenty to choose from) I can’t fault any of it.
