My sweet perversions…

patrick duvet & his sweet perversions - sex and drugs and rock and roll (mp3)

great rerub of the ian dury classic, ’sex and drugs and rock and roll’…patrick duvet & his sweet perversions pull of an extremley cheerful disco cover, which, dare i say, is lots better than the original…

this double a-side was released in 1979 on the disques clouseau label and also features a cover of the paradise garage anthem, ‘wake up and make love to me’, which is equally as cheerful…two for the price of one, bargain…

“Better than the original”? Sorry but… no fuckin’ way!!! This sounds like another cheesy Scissor Sisters cover. The Blockheads are/were one of the most rockin’, funkiest backup bands EVER!!! And nothing can replace the sheer charm of Ian’s cockney accented delivery. (I’m a yank so I don’t know if that’s the right choice of dialect description… not that it matters.)

The ONLY good thing about these tunes are the royalty checks, small as they will probably be, that will go to the REAL musicians. Anyway… I’m just sayin’….

ohhh…i new that comment wud open up a can of worms….

i love ian dury/blockheads/chaz jankel as much as the next man, reasons to be cheerful, wake up and make love to me, hit me with your rhythm stick, clever trevor, spasticus autisticus…etc etc etc…all fuckin great records inc’ sex n drugs n rock n roll…

and as for the patrick duvet and his sweet perversions cover, it IS a thouroughly cheesey slice of disco, but personally i think immensley enjoyable, and a great take on what is already a great record…but scissor sisters comparisons me think not, that is just fuckin rubbish, or how do you americans say it…trash….

anyway…’im glad your just sayin’, its good to know people are listening…maybe ill put an original dury track up to keep you happy…

OK, maybe the SS comparison was ‘fuckin rubbish’. It was the falsetto on “I know it’s going to fit” that made me think along those lines.

So I gave it a better listen and it’s not so bad. I actually ended up really liking the percussion break into the ‘vamp out’ finish with the sustained keys drone holding right to the end. Wouldn’t mind hearing the flip side if ya get the chance. Maybe along with an Ian Dury cut.

Would love to hear the “Disco Version” of Hit Me With Your Rythm Stick which I don’t think was ever released in the states. (I could be wrong on that as my Goldmine Guide shows 2 different 12″s released here. But it doesn’t say if either had that version.)

Anyway, I’ve bookmarked yer blog for future reference after checking out the archives. Keep up the good work and thanks again for the tunes!!!

never heard the disco version of ‘hit me with your rhythm stick’, wouldnt mind hearing it myself…iv got the 12 on stiff records, but its just the extended version…if you find it to download anywhere let me know…

as for an ian dury post, was thinking about putting spasticus autisticus up but the seven sea players version, not that exciting i know, but an original wud just be too easy…will post in a few days…

anyway, glad you bookmarked and you appreciate the work, i promise no more covers of ian dury with the words ‘better than the original’ next to it…scouts honour

The extended version is the one I meant! I once saw a copy on e-Bay of the Stiff 12″ and the pic of the label showed “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick (Disco Version)” as the title. Haven’t heard the ‘Seven Sea Players’ version of Spasticus Autisticus so either and/or both would be really cool!

It’s always refreshing to find a blog with interesting & different musical postings, thanks again for the great music!!!
